There are 104,000 adults living in Lancaster and Lebanon Counties who struggle with basic skills (https://nces.ed.gov/surveys/piaac/litproficiencylevel.asp). Our community partners are committed to working together to meet these adults where they are, and support them on their lifelong learning journey. Through collective impact, we can leverage our resources to increase our capacity and provide easy transitions for adults who are transforming their lives through education.

Yadira's Story Yadira was a physician in her home country of Cuba. When she and her husband emigrated from Cuba to the United States for a better life, she was no longer able to practice medicine.

Within weeks of coming to Lancaster, Yadira enrolled in English classes at The Literacy Council in a special medical ESL program for internationally trained physicians. Through a partnership with Lancaster Health Center, Yadira was able to enroll in medical assistant certification training where she attained an industry recognized credential and landed a job at Lancaster Health Center. Yadira is working as a pediatric medical assistant where she can continue to build her English language skills and learn about the American health care system. Yadira hopes to one day reclaim her career as a physician in the US.
