About Our Programs & Services
Literacy skills are foundational to success in our society. Imagine for a moment what your life would be like if you could not read, write, use a computer or access technology.
Now imagine if everyone in our community had the literacy skills they need to transform their lives, sustain their families and strengthen their communities.
That is our vision for Lancaster and Lebanon counties. Literacy is the foundation of our democracy. Unemployment rates and lifetime earnings are linked to education attainment. When adults can read, write, use math and technology they can get and keep jobs. They can make informed decisions, vote and support their children’s education. They can pay taxes and contribute to their communities.
The fact is that 14% of adults living in Lancaster and Lebanon Counties struggle with the most basic literacy skills. They cannot read the newspaper, complete a job application or write a note to their child’s teacher. They are more likely to rely on social service programs and less likely to contribute as tax paying citizens.
For these adults, The Literacy Council is their last chance to get the education they need to be productive family members, workers and citizens.
Why should you care? Chances are that you know someone personally. These adults are your neighbors, your employees, family and friends. When members of your community have the skills they need to find and keep good paying jobs, they are contributing to the overall health of our community.
You can make a difference right here in your community. Your tax deductible investment will enable us to provide free adult literacy and basic education services to people who need a second chance at getting an education. Because of you, people can really transform their lives.
The Literacy Council has been providing adult literacy and basic education services since 1985. Services include reading, writing, math, high school equivalency diploma preparation and career pathways instruction. With an annual operating budget of more than $650,000, we leverage the resources of 14 professional staff and more than 150 volunteers to provide instructional services to more than 900 adults each year. Our teaching team includes reading specialists, special education teachers, math teachers, and English teachers. Our volunteer team includes school teachers, community planners, writers, retired military officers, and college professors, to name a few.
We rely on local fund raising activities to keep our doors open to dedicated and motivated students who want a better life. Our students are diverse, coming from different backgrounds, experiences and even different countries. What they all have in common is the desire to improve their lives by improving their skills.
